Reading Blooms 2009

Reading in Bloom is part of the national "Britain in Bloom" initiative bringing out the best in villages, towns and cities throughout the UK every summer! All types of people get involved - and the whole town benefits from the amazing floral displays that pop up all over the place.

In fact with the help of many local people and businesses, and all types of organisations from schools to restaurants, Reading has been the proud winner of the Thames and Chilterns City category for the last two years, achieving a prestigious Silver Gilt award in 2008.

Who Can Enter
Anyone who lives in the Borough of Reading can enter the local competition - we are looking for the very best in a wide range of categories. Whether you garden an over-flowing window box, or a ten acres business park there is a category of Reading in Bloom for you. Don’t forget you can also nominate a friend or neighbour, just remember your entry MUST be visible from the public highway / towpath.

Why not get together with your neighbours and enter as a residential group - perhaps you even have a community garden? If you know someone whose front garden or balcony is a picture every summer, why not encourage them to enter the competition?

Categories

1. Residential - Front garden under 12ft 
2. Residential - Front garden over 12ft 
3. Residential - Front garden in communal grounds 
4. Residential - Balconies & window boxes 
5. Residential - Group entry (3 or more gardeners in street) 
6. Riverside - Florally attractive property 
7. Commercial - Landscapes/florally attractive building 
8. Pubs/restaurants - Florally attractive

Judging
All judging is carried out by members of the Reading in Bloom committee, or their nominees, and is based on criteria including general appearance, attractiveness, imaginative use of displays and (for relevant categories) floral content such as bedding, boxes and tubs.

Due consideration will be given to restrictions on displays given by water shortages (and for creative solutions to any water shortages).

Judging will normally take place in July, subject to weather conditions, and the judges’ decision is final. The closing date for the 2009 competition was Thursday 2 July.
